Elgin Home for the Holidays: Dec 1-7

ehfth14It’s a huge weekend of Elgin Home for the Holidays events so we’ve made a list (and even checked it twice!)

This week’s slate of Elgin Home for the Holidays events includes ornament making, a celebration of Chanukah and Krampus, a holiday tea to warm your spirits, a cherished downtown Elgin Christmastime storefront window decorating tradition and the annual City of Elgin tree lighting just to name a few:

DECEMBER 1-15
Christmas Toy Drive
Boys & Girls Club of Elgin
Donation Drive

Help make the Boys & Girls Club of Elgin holiday celebration a little bit more merry for a child with your donations of unwrapped toys geared for youth between 1st – 12th grade.  Donations can be dropped off at the Boys & Girls of Elgin Clubhouse located at 355 Dundee Avenue.  All donations will be distributed to Club Members at our December holiday celebration.

Donation Drive

Many area non-profit organizations are in need of essential, basic necessities from office supplies to equipment while others could benefit from financial donations or simply the gift of your volunteer service. You can find a complete list of items needed as well as the organizations in need by visiting the Elgin Area Chamber office, 31 S. Grove Avenue in downtown Elgin, during regular business hours. First Friday Krampuslauf

Opening Reception of ‘Krampuslauf’ during First Fridays in Elgin. Krampuslauf is an inaugural holiday event fashioned after the age old tradition of Krampus lore in northern Europe and showcasing the tradition’s influence on the arts. And please join us Saturday, November 22nd at Side Street Studio Noon-6pm for Krampus Mask-Making Workshop!

Come join us for a fun evening designing and painting holiday ornaments and plates. Each child will be given an ornament to paint and decorate as they choose. Each family will have one plate to design and paint as they wish. All projects will be clear glazed and fired and be available to pick up on December 15th. The family fee ($30/R $50/NR) is for a family of four with 2 children, if additional ornaments are needed just purchase the additional ornament fee at time of registration.  Refreshments will be served.

The DNA’s 16th Annual Window Wonderland returns Saturday, December 6, 2014, 12-5pm.  Celebrate the Sights, Sounds, and Scents of the Season! This year’s activities include the time honored tradition of decorated store front windows (theme to be announced), roasting of chestnuts, decorating cookies, holiday music and Santa’s real live reindeer! Stop by Elgin Police Department Open House, do a figure-8 at City Skate, enjoy the sounds of the season, write Holiday Letters to Soldiers, relax on the carriage ride and much, much more! It truly proves to be a magical wonderland in downtown Elgin that all leads up to the official City of Elgin’s Tree Lighting Ceremony ~ Truly a holiday season favorite!

Revel in the holiday delights of an opera performance by a trio of talented singers. Enjoy Old Main dressed up for Christmas with holiday exhibits and ornament making. Delicious holiday treats, punch, and tea will be served.

City of Elgin’s Tree Lighting

The City of Elgin will be kicking off the holiday season with their annual Holiday Tree Lighting Ceremony.  Mayor David Kaptain, City Council Members, and Santa Claus will turn on the holiday tree lights.  Bring the whole family out and help welcome Santa to town.

Come hear Judson University’s Chorus, Civic Orchestra and special guest artist Bob Bennett, a fabulous songwriter and amazing acoustic guitarist, whose Matters of the Heart was rated one of the 25 all-time best contemporary Christian music albums by CCM Magazine. Enjoy this concert that will also have interludes for congregational singing and hear Bob Bennett perform selections from his Christmastide CD.

Elgin Children’s Chorus will perform a variety of lively and classic Christmas songs for you to enjoy.

Elgin Home for the Holidays is co-presented by Elgin Young Professionals Network and Gail Borden Public Library and features 23 area non-profit organizations cross promoting nearly 40 holiday events.
