Coffee with EYPN

The April Coffee with EYPN event at Domani Café was well attended. Domani has been a great host for the last two coffee events. The question was raised about whether we should consider rotating these events to offer other coffee shops in town the opportunity to host. Another question was raised about if the events could be rotated to another day besides Fridays. It was decided that our next Coffee with EYPN, tentatively scheduled for mid-July or August, should rotate to Blue Box Café in downtown Elgin and we will look at the feasibility of scheduling the event on a different day of the week.

EYPN May Volunteer Event

Our next volunteer event will be a Clean-Up Day at Hawthorne Hills in Elgin on Saturday, May 16 from 9am-12pm. A Facebook event will be created and cross promoted thru the EYPN website. Sign-up will be coordinated thru Elissa Kojzarek and Molly Center.

Regarding the ongoing monthly EYPN volunteer nights with Food for Greater Elgin, we will work with Sue Ericson and her staff to coordinate another volunteer night in June. We will then continue to promote and offer the ongoing monthly FFGE opportunities to anyone who is interested and look at setting a goal for the year for total FFGE volunteer hours as an organization.

2015 Mentor Program

Past Chair Becky Hardekopf was unable to attend the meeting so discussion on the specifics of the “kick-off” event for the 2015 Mentor Program was tabled.

Discussion did take place on potential mentor candidates. We will confirm which candidates Becky has already lined-up and then reach out to those other potential mentors discussed this evening.

Discussion also took place on current EYPN members serving as mentors not just for our membership but for college students as well. Several members expressed an interest in serving as mentors. Additional discussion on the logistics and integration into our existing mentor program is needed.

It was suggested that our members perhaps consider serving as presenters for more Professional Development Series this year with topics/presenters such as Learning Adobe InDesign (Jason Pawlowski), Social Media tips (Marissa Garza, Molly Center, Krisilee Murphy, others), etc.

Tweet Night at the Symphony

The EYPN Tweet Night at the ESO will be Saturday, May 2 beginning with a wine tasting at Solo restaurant & wine bar at 6pm followed by the concert at Hemmens at 7:30pm. We have a total of 11 EYPN members and their guests attending. EYPN will prepay the ESO by check on Wednesday, April 29 and collect remaining outstanding funds from attendees by Saturday night.

Mother’s Day Cash Mob

Our spring Cash Mob will be Saturday, May 9 from 9am-1pm at The Flower Wagon, 989 W. Spring Street in South Elgin. The Facebook event went live earlier this week and over 350 people have been invited from both EYPN and the owners of The Flower Wagon. For every “cash mobster” that spends $20, they are entered into a raffle for a planter of flowers valued at $50. Winners need not be present to win. Also, each mom in attendance that day will receive a single flower as a gift.

Upcoming Community Events/Volunteer Opportunities

Downtown Elgin Art Hop (5/1) is looking for volunteers to help with registration and check-in at nine different venues in downtown Elgin. Contact Paige Roeber at the DNA at proeber@downtownelgin.com or call 847-488-1456.

Strawberry Festival (5/2) takes place at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Elgin and benefits local non-profit organizations.

City of Elgin’s Public Works Open House (5/2) is a family-friendly event that takes place at the Public Works facility at 1900 Holmes Road.

EYPN member Kari Christensen has been nominated in the Communications category for this year’s YWCA Elgin Leader Luncheon (5/7) at the Seville in Streamwood. Several EYPN members are attending to support Kari. Tickets are $55 and can be purchased at www.YWCAElgin.org.

City of Elgin’s Fox Trot is seeking volunteers for packet stuffing during the week leading up to the race (5/19-5/21). Shifts are from 9am-12pm, 12pm-3pm and 3pm-6pm. They are also in need of pre-registration volunteers (5/22) and race day volunteers (5/23) for check-in and other duties.

Bikes and Bites on the Fox (5/30) will be a bicycle-friendly event on Riverside Drive featuring food trucks, farmers market, kids activities and more. EYPN is organizing the bags activity for the event. We will post this as a volunteer opportunity for EYPN members and we need at least 2-3 people. We are also looking into prizes for a potential bags tournament at the event. Angela Carlson will promote Bikes and Bites on the Fox on her 7 for the Weekend segment on 95.9-FM The River.

Other Discussion

Marissa Garza has agreed to organize a new EYPN Book Club, where different members will pick a book each quarter that they like for other participating members to read. Then we will host informal quarterly meetings to discuss.

The group was definitely on board with doing another EYPN painting night. We will decide on an appropriate night for sometime this summer and work with Ola la Ijorere to schedule. Several members expressed interest in doing the Riverside Drive painting.

Brooke Wardle will be joining as a new EYPN member thru Judson University. Brooke will only be in the Elgin area until late summer. We will give the option to Judson to send another representative in her place after Brooke leaves.

Andrew Block has also expressed interest in joining and volunteering at some of our upcoming EYPN functions.

The group was in favor of conducting the next meeting at Prairie Rock Bar & Grill in downtown Elgin in their outdoor beer garden. We will confirm this with Christina Pearson just in case a May venue has already been confirmed.

Next Meeting: Thursday, May 21st at 6pm (location TBD)

Elgin Home for the Holidays Update

Elaina McCalmont, Elgin Home for the Holidays Co-Chair gave an update on this EYPN ran initiative. Non-Profit participation is up from that last two years and has a total of 22 participants. The Annual Brochures have been printed and we have copies for everyone to help pass out. If you need more please contact, Krisilee Murphy.

We are still in need for volunteers for the Elgin Home for the Holidays Kick-Off on Saturday, November 8th at Gail Borden Library. If you would like to help then please reach out to Elaina (Elaina@little-angels.us) directly. Since this is an EYPN ran event we ask that all members try to come. Families are welcome! For more information on Elgin Home for the Holidays please check out the new website created by Board Member Jason Pawlowski at www.elginhomefortheholidays.com

Fall Cash Mob

The group decided that Brittain’s Express Oil and Lube would be a great business to host our next Fall Cash Mob. They not only provide oil changes but also car washes. We should have a November date for everyone shortly. As, soon as we send it out we ask for everyone to please help us spread the word. www.brittainsexpressoil.com

New for 2015 – Dues

We will start collected dues in 2015. The dues will be used to upkeep the website and work to further the group’s reach in our community. $25 will be collected every year for all members. This money will also be used to help us track who is an active member in the group. For the $25, all members will receive the following: Elgin Young Professionals Network T-shirt, Email Communications, Member Only Social Event, Opportunity to participate in the mentor program, First look at job postings, Assistance in board placement (if interested). Other benefits can/will be added as the year goes on.

New Mentor Program

Our 2014 Mentor Program was a success! We would like to continue the program in 2015 and expand it to be able to include more members. A file is being developed to help everyone decide if they would like to have a mentor, be a mentor or maybe wait until next year to participate. As soon as the form is completed we will email it out. We will have an update at the meeting. Please note, the mentor program is what you make of it. Some pairs meet on a monthly basis and have an agenda, while others met when schedules allowed and used the time to get to know each other. Both formats are great.

Also new in 2015 we will start committees to cover all aspects on the EYPN group. We are hoping everyone will want to get involved in one way or another. The more you put in, the more you can get out. Below are the committees that will be formed. Committees will meet as needed. We will be asking members to sign-up at the November meeting so think about which committee you would like to join.

    1. Volunteer
    2. Social
    3. Marketing
    4. Mentor Program
    5. Professional

We reached our goal! Over 480 raffle tickets were sold. Great job to everyone helped collect donations, put together the baskets and spread the word about the event. We will be giving away two scholarships: one to a high school student entering ECC’s culinary program and one to a scholarship winner last year that is continuing their education.

What went well:

- Hula Hoop Contest was a hit. The whole group agreed that we need something to get the event attendees up on their doing something.
- No cover charge. Rather encourage the attendees to buy more tickets.
- A band would be a good addition – Stephanie knows a lot of bands.

What could be changed/improved:

- Need a larger space.
- Do two fundraisers to raise money, one in the spring and one in late summer/early fall, so we know the exact amount of scholarship money we can giveaway prior to announcing the scholarship.
- Get consolation prizes for anyone who buys a ticket.
- Start collecting donations much earlier. Elaina recommended at least 6 months out.
- Award the scholarship at the event.

Themes for the next Scholarship Fundraiser:

Stephanie suggested pirates. Christina suggested super heroes. Jason said Super Suits is a local band that has a relationship with the owners of Danny’s Pizza. Elissa suggested live cooking demos or a game like Chopped, the TV show. We could put a list of ingredients on our website and Facebook and let people vote for what the students will have to cook with. Stephanie said we could even have people pledge money towards the ingredient they would like the students to use. The top winners get used.

2014 scholarship forms will go out in early May. Stephanie, Krisilee, Saul, Jason, Elissa and Christina all requested to receive and subsequently review the completed scholarship applications for judging.

Our next Cash Mob is going to take place mid/late May. Past mobs have taken place at Elgin Books & Coffee, SpaceTaste Gallery, State Street Market and Downtown Elgin Harvest Market. The group offered up ideas from Soulful Sparrow, Viking Thrift & Artwork, Rediscover Records, Town & Country Gardens.

The group all agreed that Herb’s Bakery would be fun for our next Cash Mob. Because Herb’s is only open until 5pm weekdays, we would need to look at doing the Cash Mob either early morning during the week (like 7-8am) or on a Saturday morning. Someone from EYPN needs to reach out to Wendy, the owner.

In case you missed it, we have a website! Jason has worked tirelessly to provide us with this new resource. Please check it out and let us know if you see anything we could add. We will use this to promote upcoming events, meeting minutes, job postings and more. We are asking you to continue to engage with us on content. If you see a job posting or if your company has a volunteer experience, then let us know.

Jason has reached out to Chris Higgins from Future Link IT in Elgin to transfer the domains for ElginYoungProfessionals.com and ElginHomefortheHolidays.com to Future Link’s servers. Both sites will now be WordPress.org self-hosted sites which will enable us to add features like an Events Calendar widget, directories, etc. EYPN will then relaunch ElginHomefortheHolidays.com with a new look and features. The look of ElginYoungProfessionals.com will mostly stay the same.

Our next session is set to take place on Tuesday, June 10th at 6pm. We will have a couple board presidents speak about skills we need to develop to become a beneficial board member. More details to follow.

The group was asked how they would feel about having all the members volunteer for at least one of the committees. Everyone thought it was a good idea. The committees: Scholarship, Professional Development Planning, Elgin Home for the Holidays and Social Events. More will probably come up but those are the ones we could think of as a group.

We did a wrap-up of the last Professional Development Session and had all positive feedback. Everyone took away a different tip; profile pictures on LinkedIn must be facing towards your profile or edit your summary to control the endorsements you receive. A couple members asked that we provide notes after the next session, so people who were not able to attend can still learn. This will also add more valuable content to our website.

The next Professional Development Session is tentatively scheduled for Tuesday, June 10th and will cover skills needed to become a valuable board member. We are working on firming the date in September and November, along with speakers, for the remainder of the sessions this year. We encouraged everyone to email us if they have any ideas or suggestions.

Our 2nd Annual Scholarship Fundraiser is right around the corner. We will be hosting the fundraiser at Chooch’s Pizzeria, 64 S. Grove Avenue. Last year we were able to give away three scholarships to the Elgin High School students entering the culinary program at Elgin Community College. This year we would like to give a scholarship to a past winner, to continue their education and another high school student. Please help us spread the word to get people there but also to collect donations.

We have been emailing everyone the list of donations to date. Send over anything you get and we can put it in another basket or have it stand as a prize on its own. All baskets/prizes are worth a minimum of $50.

Our next meeting will be Tuesday, April 22 at 6pm at Elgin Public House, 219 E. Chicago Street in downtown Elgin.
