Elgin Young Professionals Network is happy to announce the recipients of its 2014 Elgin Clumsy Chefs scholarships, benefitting students from Elgin High School’s award winning culinary program.
Elgin High School senior Aracely Villagomez, received a $500 scholarship to Elgin Community College.
Joseline Sifuentes, an Elgin High School graduate and one of three inaugural Clumsy Chefs scholarship recipients from 2013, also received a $500 scholarship to continue her culinary education at ECC.
Scholarship applications were reviewed by a judging panel of EYPN members.
For the past two years, the Elgin Young Professionals Network has awarded scholarships to students participating in the Elgin High School Clumsy Chefs program lead by EYPN member Ann Leider, with an eye towards pursuing a Culinary Arts degree at Elgin Community College.
The scholarship program helps foster and empower the next generation of young professionals while promoting the value of higher education.

The YWCA Elgin Leader Luncheon Awards annually recognize the best and brightest women in Elgin who have demonstrated a commitment to excellence in leadership. This year’s extensive list of Leader Luncheon award nominees proudly boasted three Elgin Young Professionals Network members:

Congratulations to Grand Victoria Foundation Program Manager and EYPN Board President Becky Hardekopf, who received “The Young Professional” Friend of Tourism Award at the Elgin Area Convention and Visitors Bureau 7th Annual Tourism Luncheon on Monday, May 5 at Grand Victoria Casino in Elgin.
Becky was chosen for her exempliary efforts as a brand ambassador for Elgin thru the EACVB’s #ResidentRec program, which encourages visitors to rave about and share the positives of local restaurants, bars and other tourist attractions in the Elgin area thru social media.
The 7th Annual Tourism Luncheon event was attended by nearly 100 guests and local dignitaries and helped kick-off National Travel and Tourism Week in the Elgin Area.
The Elgin Young Professionals Network congratulates our fearless leader, Becky Hardekopf, on receiving this well-deserved honor.
The Community Carnival, which takes place May 1-4 and May 8-11 at the intersection of Kimball and N. Grove Avenue (across from the Gail Borden Public Library) in downtown Elgin, is seeking volunteers to greet visitors, give information and directions, or provide general maintenance at the event.
Shift schedules are as follows (3-hour shifts):
Thursday shifts: 4:30-7:30 and 7-10 (5-10 counts as double shift)
Friday shifts: 4:30-7:30 and 7-10 (5-10 counts as double shift)
Saturday shifts: 1-4, 4-7 and 7-10
Sunday shifts: 1-4, 4-7 and 7-10
There are two ways volunteers can also help support your local school or non-profit:
1. $10 per volunteer shift will be donated to a Non-Profit/School
2. For every 10 people that volunteer for a Non-profit/ School, they will receive $100
Congratulations to Elgin Area Convention & Visitors Bureau Director of Marketing and Elgin Young Professionals Network board Vice President, Krisilee Murphy, on her nomination for the City of Elgin’s 2014 Image Awards.
EVENT DATE CHANGE: The annual event, which takes place Thursday, March 27 at 6pm at The Centre of Elgin’s Heritage Ballroom, 100 Symphony Way, recognizes individuals, businesses and organizations that have had a positive impact on the Elgin community.
For her outstanding work in promoting tourism in the Elgin area, Murphy was named a 30-Under-30 Ambassador last year by Destination Marketing Association International. She also serves as chair of Market Illinois, a high profile niche marketing committee of the Illinois Office of Tourism. In 2012, she received the YWCA Elgin’s Marguerite Henry Award for Communications at the annual Leader Luncheon.

The Literacy Connection, a 501(c)(3) organization in Elgin providing free, accessible, and customized one-on-one tutoring to adult learners, is currently seeking volunteers to serve on their Board of Directors.
Purpose: To provide leadership, advice, and policies to The Literacy Connection staff and volunteers by working together with other board members and the Executive Director to ensure effective and fiscally sound programs and operations.
Hours: Board meetings are held the fourth Monday of each month, usually at the Gail Borden Public Library, beginning at 7 p.m. Board participation is expected at our largest annual fundraiser, Trivia Bee, typically held in April, and our Tutor/Learner Recognition held in June.
